Noun: hong
A merchantile establishment or factory for foreign trade in China, as formerly at Canton.
Merchants representing thirteen foreign countries who handled official
trade between China and the West in the late 18th century. Located on the Pearl River in Canton, these factories or "Hongs"
served Western traders as warehouses, offices and residences. The trading system was established in 1757 by the Manchu Dynasty
to eliminate contact between the Chinese People and "foreign devels".
